FOREST: Keen interest in WWF China workshop on timber legality
In May, 37 IKEA suppliers and 17 IKEA co-workers attended a WWF workshop in Qingdao, China on timber legality compliance in practice. The aim was to clarify theoretical and practical hot-spots for Chinese wood companies with the help of Chinese and Russian experts.
In 2009, 52.78% of imported round wood in China was from Russia. The timber legality compliance is critical for all Chinese forestry companies covering the field of management, production, and trade of timber with Russia.
Experts from both China and Russia held presentations and answered questions from participants. Topics included government policy trend on Sino-Russia overseas investment, the supply of sustainable raw material from Russia, legality verification of logging and trade, as well as risk prevention and the reluctance to invest and trade in Russia.
