More FSC certified rattan on its way to Europe
The export of FSC certified rattan from Laos to Europe is picking up speed thanks to growing demand in Switzerland, UK, US and Sweden. A large batch of products is currently on its way to the Coop in Switzerland.
The very first forest in the world that gained FSC certification for rattan was in Laos at the end of 2011, and in 2012 the first order of certified rattan products was exported, also to the Coop in Switzerland. The growing demand for certified, finished rattan products is adding value locally, guaranteeing an income for villagers and ensuring that threatened local tropical forests aren’t over-exploited.
Laos is still the only country to produce FSC certified rattan. WWF and government authorities plan to expand the country’s FSC certified areas from just over 1,000 hectares to more than 5,000 hectares in 2013, and by 2014 the certified areas could reach as much 20,000 hectares. Besides IKEA the export part of the project is also supported by WWF Switzerland and Coop in Switzerland. Read more about WWFs work with rattan here
